Thirteenth-placed Wolfsburg are ‘next in line’ to try to stop the Bundesliga steamroller that is Bayern. With nine consecutive wins and counting for the away team, there’s bound to be some nervous fans at the Volkswagen Arena.
With 24 points from 22 games, Wolfsburg have four points between themselves and the red zone. However, three of the five teams behind them in the league have more points from the last five matches than Die Wölfe, and things could fast become uncomfortable.
No comfort, however, is to be found on the opposite side of the field. Since Jupp Heynckes was appointed (again) in October 2017, Bayern have played 22 matches (in all competitions), winning 20, with just one draw and one defeat!
Furthermore, Bayern have won five of the last six Bundesliga meetings between the sides - last season thumping the Wolves 6-0 at the Volkswagen Arena.
Wolfsburg coach Martin Schmidt has been trying to rally his troops for the final stretch of the season: “We’re not winning the key battles at the moment.... Everyone knows that its a critical time, now it’s about sticking together and stopping this trend.” He probably wishes they were facing a different opponent!
Players to watch: Recently named Polish footballer of the year for the seventh consecutive year, Robert Lewandowski will be looking to add to his 19 Bundesliga goals so far.
Liverpool loanee Divock Origi has five goals for the Wolves so far, and scored in their last home game. Can he repeat?
Stat attack: Bayern have won nine consecutive Bundesliga games, with a total goal score of 22-7.
Wolfsburg have been the ‘king of draws’ this Bundesliga season. Twelve out of 22 in total, and seven out of 12 at home is by far the most draws on both accounts.
Wolfsburg at home and Bayern away both have seen over 2.5 goals in five out of 11 matches (45%).
Thanks to a 2-1 win over Schalke Bayern Munich moved one step closer to defending their Bundesliga title. The mighty Bavarians are leading the chase for the domestic trophy and they are 16 points clear of second-placed Leipzig ahead of Saturdays football match against Wolfsburg. Jupp Heynckes troops are eyeing their tenth consecutive win in the national championship and they are likely to stick to their attacking style of play against Wolfsburg. The Wolves have been struggling in Bundesliga ever since key attacker Mario Gomez left the club, with the team experiencing all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-1 loss to Werder Bremen at the weekend. Bayern Munich want to get their job done in the league as soon as possible as they want to focus on the Champions League double-header against Besiktas and, taking everything into account, away win should be considered.
